It is during the first season that we learn there is a contingent of Marthas and Handmaids who have formed a resistance movement called Mayday, and within it they have created their own network of passing messages to one another as well as smuggling messages to the outside world of Canada, where Gilead has no power and everyone is still free. Throughout the first season, she lives with Commander Fred Waterford and his wife, Serena Joy, who is desperate for a child. June (Elisabeth Moss), the main character, was formerly a wife and mother with a robust career of her own before she was thrust into the Gilead lifestyle and forced to be a Handmaid due to her fertile status.
